Eight Masterclass choices on the theme of 'Insight into technology - implications for learning'

Masterclass 1 Using the right tools to breakdown the classroom walls – 2 Simple Style

With 2Simple’s new tools, this session led by 2Simple’s Max Wainewright creatively embraces current issues such as motivation and learning for a purpose in our primary schools. 2Simple will give you an insight as to how their simple-to-use tools can release powerful learning outcomes to learners everywhere via technology which offers both local and global audiences. In this session you will get hands-on exploration time so bring a laptop with you.

Masterclass 2 Educational Content Mashups - fostering greater engagement– Magic Studio

With Learning Platforms in place, many Local Authorities and Schools are now looking at how to drive engagement with digitally native pupils and increasingly web aware teachers.  However, current publishing models for education content are failing to adequately keep pace for a truly read/write educational web.

In this session, the team behind the interactive content network, Magic Studio, will showcase how they are bringing content from museums and commercial publishers into the classroom in a mashable, constructive manner.

Interactive learning resources created by teachers and pupils will be showcased and discussed.  The session will also provide insight into how Nottinghamshire Local Authority is using Magic Stu-dio to leverage existing investments in Learning Platforms to drive greater engagement, collabo-ration and resource sharing.

Masterclass 3 The next generation of assessment – GL Assessment

In light of the Government’s announcement to suspend KS3 National Tests, GL Assessment will examine how assessment is changing. As well as covering the assessments teachers will be ad-ministering in the future, the session will highlight the benefits of using technology to administer tests and analyse results. It is a must-attend for schools looking for guidance on new ways to assess pupil progress, as well as those looking to implement e-assessment successfully.

Schools in the future will be designed to better facilitate e-learning: a sound, stable IT infra-structure and more open learning spaces will allow the technology to work at its optimum level. This will also encourage new approaches to delivering and administering assessment, partly so that schools can deliver truly personalised learning and partly to deliver a new curriculum which may require 'multi-site' learning and assessment (take, for example, the Vocational Diplomas).

GL Assessment will be on hand to demonstrate e-assessment in practice and show how schools and local authorities can implement e-assessment in their settings.

Masterclass 4 Writing success anytime, anywhere – Crick Software

This session will be presented by John & Ann Crick, both former teachers. The presentation will draw on the experiences of real students to show the benefits of using online software.

Today's students are used to being able to access applications from any computer at any time. They use sites such as Facebook, You Tube and online chat as part of everyday life. Having edu-cational applications delivered online is therefore a natural way for students to work and offers numerous benefits for both students and teachers.

Online tools allow students to work on their documents on any computer. In addition, web 2.0 tools enable students to establish an online dialog with their teachers. These concepts will be illustrated with the innovative WriteOnline, recognized by the worldwide Java community as this year's most innovative education project using the Java platform (The Duke's Choice Awards).

The presentation will also demonstrate how students of all abilities benefit from software devel-oped using Universal Design principles. This includes reluctant Writers and English language learners. All attendees will receive a complementary 28 day login for WriteOnline.

Masterclass 5 Changing the way your school works – FrogTrade Limited

All learning platforms produce some efficiency in the ways teachers and pupils work. But the real impact comes when the platform enables teachers and pupils to themselves design and build systems in the platform to engage others. It is the control of visual design, structure of the sys-tem and of how users interact with it that matters. Immediate feedback enables refinement of the systems; the buzz of discussion around the school as to whose departmental website, tutor group or pastoral site is best causes rapid re-versioning. A positive spiral of creation with passion and engagement with enjoyment drives positive changes of attitude right across the school.

Ofsted's report on Attleborough school puts it well - "Students are delighted with the virtual learning environment, which is having an outstanding impact on the school’s work. It has opened up state of the art learning for students as well as for parents and the wider community, has transformed the culture of the school and given a new slant and impetus to learning in the broadest sense."

This impact is now being seen in many schools using Frog - the Masterclass is based on studies done by an independent consultant in 12 schools. All take different approaches but the central driver putting the schools on a faster improvement track is the same. The task now is proper evaluation and distilling the critical factors to make this replicable in all schools, which the class will discuss.

Masterclass 6 A world of learning beyond boundaries – Netmedia Education

Looking towards 2012,  breaking down the constraints of timetables and classroom walls, thinking beyond traditional concepts of teaching tools and resources, to ensure that learning experiences are real, relevant and culturally enriched. Presenters: Dr Yasmin Bailey and Virginia Tatlioglu, Netmedia Education Knowledge Exchange (Espresso Group)

Masterclass 7 Collaboration and sharing using Web 2.0 tools in the classroom and at home – Just2Easy Limited

The session will look at practical methods for sharing and collaborating within the classroom and at home. In the main j2e.com will be used to illustrate the principles. Attendees will be wel-come to participate in live collaboration and sharing and will need a wireless Java enabled de-vice to do so.

Masterclass 8 Whatever will they think of next – part II – Microsoft

Last year’s session at the conference (Whatever will they think of next?) looked at a range of new technologies and pedagogical implications. This year, we have invited a school to come along and show how they are being used to support learning and pedagogical change.
We will take a look back at new technology announcements since the last Naace conference, and take a look forward at the implications for learning.
