In this article, we provide a flavour of the Naace ICT Coordinators Course which may be of interest to potential course providers and participants.

Title and purpose

Training and support for new ICT coordinators.

Aims

The course aims to: raise standards of pupils’ attainment in ICT by improving the standards of its coordination in UK schools; train and support aspiring ICT coordinators in primary and secondary schools; improve and increase the number and quality of applicants for ICT coordinator posts nationwide.

Course contents

Planning and delivery the ICT National Curriculum

  • Understand the ICT Curriculum and models of delivery
  • Assessment and Recording
  • Writing schemes of work
  • Monitoring and evaluating pupil progress
  • Delivering good quality ICT lessons

Curriculum – ICT in subjects of the curriculum

  • Understanding the statutory requirements for ICT in subjects of the curriculum
  • Models for integrating ICT in schemes of work for other subjects
  • Generating assessment data to inform reported National Curriculum and Key Skills levels
  • Monitoring teaching and learning

Vision, self review and development planning

Whole school vision for ICT in the school Self review process – department, whole school ICT linking with School Self Evaluation Writing whole school ICT development plans

ICT in administration

Making the link between administration use of ICT to serve the curriculum Learning platforms ICT for data analysis and target setting

New issues, staffing and staff development

New Government initiatives issues (changes with each course) Roles and responsibilities – job descriptions Managing teachers and technicians Setting up ICT working parties and management groups Representation to senior managers and governors Linking staff training to curriculum needs

Hardware and Software

Internet safety Linking hardware and software needs to curriculum outcomes Basic network and workstation management Resource deployment Technical support

Interview Practice

The opportunity to have guidance and the opportunity to write: • a letter of application and a CV • a mock interview

Total contact hours:30 hrs Range of modes of contact: Face to face sessions. Electronic conferencing Range of other learning methods: Assignments to be completed at school Total study hours 60 hrs

Learning outcomes

To raise standards of pupils’ attainment in ICT by improving the standards of its co-ordination in UK schools To offer training and support to aspiring ICT co-ordinators in both Primary and Secondary schools. To ensure such training and support is practical and immediately useful within the school and teaching environment. To make use of a range of teaching and learning strategies including face to face and distance learning via appropriate new technologies. To create closer partnerships with schools in Hampshire by asking them to identify potential beneficiaries for the training and asking them to offer support and opportunities to gain “on the job” experience. To demonstrate the value of the training to schools by improving and increasing the number and quality of applicants for ICT coordinator posts county wide. To demonstrate clear, quantifiable gains in management and ICT skills for the target groups of trainees. To work in partnership with a Tertiary Education Institution by ensuring the training provides a recognised qualification and offers CATS points which are recognised by most Universities.

Assessment methods

Assignments, introduced at the face to face sessions and completed in school context 20% ICT National Curriculum and assessment 15% ICT in subjects 15% Development Planning 15% ICT Administration 15% Staffing and Professional Development Resources 15% Mock ICT Interview (CV, LOA) 5% Resources

Term 1

1 day launch (7hrs) 1 session (4hrs) 10 hrs spent on assignment work

Term 2

2 sessions (total 8hrs) 10 hrs spent on assignment work

Term 3

1 session (4hrs) 1 day (7hrs) 10 hrs spent on assignment work Total 60hrs - leading to a module certificate
