This is a simulation developed ten years ago by me and a secondary student from a school in York.  We were exploring how to use the random number generator in Excel to create something a bit different, perhaps even attractive.  To make it work, load it into Excel and hold down the f9 key to make the sheet recalculate, and the water ripple.

Some challenges.

What sort of chart type is being used?

What has happened to the axes?

How is it actually working? (Clue: move the chart)

How could you change it to make the waves bigger?

How could you change it to make the water a different colour?

Mega challenge; make it more realistic by making a wave move across the surface
